Hello In Iowa. I woke up today to find that we are finally getting snow in the SE. Some of you may have already had snow this year, but down here we are just getting started. I am not sure why, but it feels good and reassuring. It always feels odd to me when its too warm in the Fall and early winter. The snow however brings up some thoughts. As preppers we all know there is a lot to consider. Weather is a critical factor when prepping in Iowa. Ice and snow storms can come down hard on us. It is a good idea to keep emergency kits in your vehicles. Bags of sand or even cat litter can help give the car weight and to use for traction if you get stuck. A shovel may come in handy some day. You can get folding ones that do not take up a lot of space. I like to keep a tow rope in my trunk. There may be a good samaritan ready to pull you out of a snow bank, who does not have one of their own. I learned this lesson when I put my car in a ditch driving home from Chicago a couple of years ago. I don't know about everyone else, but I am notorius for jumping in the car with just a light jacket on assuming I will have the car to keep me warm. Once the car goes in the ditch you really start wanting that snow gear. Extra hats, gloves, and maybe even a coat could help in an emergency. Keeping a coffee can and candles can keeo you warm for a bit until help arrives. Even if the car is still running you could run out of gas. Think of a heat source to warm the car if needed. Think outside the box here. The trunk is a perfect place to store some extra survival gear to get you through in a pinch. It is always better to have something and not need it, than to need it and not have it. You are really not out much if you have extra things in the car. The car is a great place to start thinking about what you would need in an emergency. Good luck and stay warm....
